San Fermín 2025: Tradition, Bulls and Celebration
The San Fermín festival, held every year from July 6th to 14th in Pamplona, Spain, is world-famous for its running of the bulls. While the event has become internationally known, it remains deeply rooted in local tradition and culture.
The highlight for many visitors are the daily encierros (bull runs), which take place at 8:00 AM from July 7th to 14th. Runners and six bulls cover 825 meters through the narrow streets of Pamplona’s old town, finishing in the bullring. The run typically lasts between two to three minutes, with the bulls reaching speeds of 24 km/h. Safety is strictly enforced – participants must be at least 18 years old, sober, and are prohibited from provoking the animals.
The festival officially begins at noon on July 6th with the Chupinazo, when a rocket is launched from the city hall balcony, marking the start of nine days of celebration. The streets quickly fill with people dressed in the traditional white clothing with red scarves and sashes.
Other key events include: The procession of San Fermín on July 7th, daily bullfights in the afternoon, traditional performances by local peñas (social clubs) and nightly fireworks displays.
While the bull runs attract the most attention, San Fermín is also a time for family gatherings, traditional music, and enjoying Navarrese food and drink. The festival concludes on July 14th with the emotional «Pobre de Mí» ceremony at midnight, when participants sing and light candles to mark the end of another year’s celebrations.
The event maintains its authentic character despite its international fame, offering visitors a genuine experience of Spanish culture and tradition. Local authorities work to balance tourism with preserving the festival’s historical significance to Pamplona and the Navarre region.
